it seems after watching tv that the more silly the advertisement is, the more effective it is. I say this since the majority of advertisements utilize this sort of formula therefore it must be effective. But it’s very hard to realize why this works.
Next you have your deliberately annoying ads, you know the ones much like the pain reliever that you just “apply straight to the forehead” that they say fifty times repeatedly just to be annoying. But, we irritated souls go right to our cards and order the product or service. Sure it can make you remember it, as I am sure is the main reason they are doing it, but what good can it do to remember it when you hate it anyway? And yet somehow it works.
I actually do sort of a boycott on some products simply because their ads are extremely irritating so I refuse to purchase them, but that’s just me. I figure that if an organization needs to dance and sing about gibberish to be funny and doesn’t tell me anything in regards to the product, then I won’t believe in them.
Does gender offer clues as to what this all means? I think most TV advertising is designed to focus on the ladies of the shopping world which is why the ads confuse me, because I am a guy. I hate to gender polarize this but it would seem that for an ad to work for males it takes a different method. Men are looking for useable facts about the product while they watch an advertisement. They are not as moved by emotional elements but are looking for real differences between competing products that they can measure while women tend to react more to how the advertisement made them feel. It is really an over-generalization obviously since there are some males and females who actually think a lot more like the opposite sex. But typically there appears to be a big difference relating to the best advertising approach based on gender.
There are a few ways that silly advertising has worked on men though but there will be just one subject on which to achieve it: you guessed it, sex. Place a extremely stunning woman on screen and a mans once technically focused reasoning goes right down the drain and he quickly turns into an approachable customer. She could be selling an empty box and he’s gotta have that box!
Since all TV advertisements are very expensive, and free advertising rarely works well for massive corporations you have to think that their advertising works or they wouldn’t be doing things the way they do.
And once you accept that as truth, then what does this say about the intelligence of the human race? When all you gotta do is dress up as being a clown and they all come stampeding to purchase your cheaply made hamburgers like lemmings headed for the sea?
If space aliens are indeed watching us then I am very sure that they are not impressed.
